While 2008 hardly seems like a historic year quite yet, when a kid breaks the all-time record for most Olympic gold medals won in a single year with eight; history is instantly made.
Eight gold’s in a single year was enough to set the world record against another swimmer Mark Spitz who took seven golds at Munic in 1972. The only other person to ever win eight medals in a single year was Alexander Dityatin, a Russian gymnast, who took eight mixed medals at Moscow in 1980.
