World of Riots (Infographic)
The recent riots in London got us talking about all of the riots we could think of in the 21st century, leading us to look up the full list on good old Wikipedia.
It was somewhat surprising to see just how sheltered us North Americans really are, since none of us had any idea that there have been around 250 riots in the 21st century alone.
We started our research looking to see just how bad sporting-event induced riots have been in comparison to riots started for a real purpose. While our assumptions were correct (sporting event riots are small potatoes) it started to get interesting to compare all riot stats and details.
Since we were knee-deep in data anyway it just made sense to turn it into an infographic. Below you’ll find a quick look at the riots of the 21st century and the scale of the lives lost in the chaos.
Sports Riots
Out of the 250 riots used to collect data, 15 were sporting-event related:
- Soccer (8 riots, 2 deaths)
- Hockey (3 riots)
- Basketball (3 riots)
- Football (1 riot)
Both of Canada’s sporting riots came from Hockey (big surprise) while the USA took five riots, a mix of Basketball (3) Football (1) and Hockey (1). Out of the five USA sporting event riots only one was for professional sports (2009 LA Riot after the Lakers won the Championships), the rest were at University events.
